  1. When You Go

Lyrics

When You Go
(Tiffany Williams)

All the houses look the same, that's the first thing anybody says when they come here
Coal camp houses all in rows, some falling in, some two-stories still have two front doors
I cursed this place when I was young for cursing me with a broken tongue
And hiding the horizon from my view
But these days I keep thinking of the land whose shoulders block the sun
And people who make music like I do

(Chorus)
I worry that my best isn't any good anywhere but here
Sometimes I think of staying, I'd live up on a mountain and the fog in my head would clear
There's no way of saying that it took more than it gave when it's all you've known
But I do know, you can't leave it when you go

Consolidated Coal broke ground in 1912, built this town and brought the workers in
Gave them a store, paid them in scrip, and made indentured servants of the able-bodied men
My family came before the mines, road through Pound Gap trying to find a place to make a home up on a ridge
It makes it hard to leave when you've been living here 200 years, but I knew I had to go and so I did

(Chorus)
I worry that my best isn't any good anywhere but here
Sometimes I think of staying, I'd live up on a mountain and the fog in my head would clear
There's no way of saying that it took more than it gave when it's all you've known
But I do know, you can't leave it when you go

On that wall they painted names of men who spent their days in darkness, digging up the coal
Here's one of mine, in '63 two loading cars crushed both legs between his hips and knees
They said he'd never walk again, and doped him up on medicine that he kept taking after he was fine
His wife had bathed and dressed him but he left her and both their kids
My daddy says he still remembers crying

(Chorus)
I worry that my best isn't any good anywhere but here
Sometimes I think of staying, I'd live up on a mountain and the fog in my head would clear
There's no way of saying that it took more than it gave when it's all you've known
But I do know, you can't leave it when you go
